3 Causes of Hesitation

You have an assignment. A mission. A purpose.

But sometimes we all can get a little stuck.

"Where are you hesitating right now?" is one of the questions I love asking clients during coaching.

When we deeply probe our hesitations, we uncover blockages and barriers.

There are one, two, or three reasons why you are hesitating to do the thing you know you're supposed to do. Here they are:

  1. You are afraid.

  2. You feel inadequate.

  3. You don't know what to do.

If you're afraid, you're scared of people or penalty.

You're afraid of what people will think of you if you try, or if you fail, or if you quit early, or if you succeed. You might even be concerned about the "who do they think they are?" sentiment people push onto people who dare to go for it.

You also might be fearful of a penalty. What would achievement cost you? Would you lose time, freedom, or autonomy? Would you be stuck in a new spotlight, unable to hide out anymore? Will the emotional toll be too high? Would the dream demand energy that you don't want to be obligated to give? Will you lose money? Will your relationships suffer? Or, worse of all, will you be successful at something that doesn't even matter?

Of course, because most fears are often based on exaggerations (lies), they can be overcome. You'll need a new perspective to move past them. You can beat these fears AND do your dream AND still flourish in life! It just takes a little planning.

Action: Make a list of all your fears. Every. Single. One. Then, share them with a coach, trusted friend, or partner.

If you feel inadequate, hear me clearly: You are enough! You are loved by God. Your value is immense. You are worth listening to. You have something to contribute. The lies you believe about yourself are nonsense.

Action: Go ahead. Bet on yourself! What's the worse that could happen?

If you feel you don't know what to do, I think you're lying - to yourself. (Or believing lies told to you.)

You have the information you need, or at least you know where to get it.

You have the abilities and skills you need, or you know where to find them.

You have the resources, or you can get the resources.

Action: If you feel unready, it's time to talk to your coach. Maybe you're just too timid to ask for the information, help, or resources you need. Make a list of 5-8 things you need to do your thing. Then reorder them into steps.

As the advertisers say, "Don't delay! Act today!".
